CACIM’s Internship Programme

CACIM Needs interns for two of its programme at the moment

1. The World Social Forum : A Critical Engagement

The programme is aimed at broadening and deepening informed involvement in the WSF process in India, and more broadly in the South Asian region, through critical examination of the procedural depth, methodology, potentialities, and impact of the Forum and the ‘new politics’ it professes and embodies on socio-political movements and processes in the region, through extensive surveys, interviews, and discussions with the main actors in the process.

Detailed research into and documentation of the Forum and other processes (like movements), to understand how open space operates – but guided by an ethic of research where we share our work with those we are ‘working on’. It also aims to introduce to students, activists, and other actors of societal processes, in India and internationally, contemporary thoughts and views on cultures of political practice; and in particular, thoughts generated from critical debate in the South on the world as a whole; with the overall objective of inspiring critical engagement with society and politics.

The activities include the publication of books and reports on the Forum, in Hindi and English and also in other languages such as Bengali, Urdu, and Nepali wherever possible and appropriate, critical debates and discussions around various themes, creating an exhaustive database on the Forum and cultures of politics, and the generation of comprehensive bibliographies and chronologies, and starting a monthly e-newsletter on the publication of materials related to WSF which will serve the important dual purpose of documenting an historical process and opening debate on modes of association and organisation, and through this too on prevalent and potential cultures of politics and movement. We believe these activities can be an important contribution to the ongoing struggles in all these directions – of challenging the many empires that continue to govern our lives in various societies.

2. Political - Cultural Glossary on World Movement

Over the past decade or so, the work of the worldwide alter-globalist movement, scholars and researchers, and media and other cultural initiatives all over the world have in their own ways increasingly challenged the legitimacy of current political and economic institutions. In the course of doing so however, they have also re-defined politics, cultures of politics, and the very language of politics, in many ways. Activists, artists, media-practitioners, and scholars across the world are working, through the articulation of theory and practice, on issues related to cultures of politics and organisation within movements, institutions, and civil and political processes more generally. Broadly speaking, they are working towards constructing more inclusive, horizontal, and culturally sensitive political cultures, practices, and institutions as a means to creating more effective and truly democratic politics.

On the one hand, these ideas and initiatives – constituting and reflecting new and emerging modes of political-cultural activity, and arising out of the objective and subjective realities in which we live and work today - lie at the heart of both contemporary and emerging social and political movements and also of social movement study, across the world. On the other hand, they also arise out of intense dissatisfaction with the nature of dominant existing social and political theory as well as of existing political institutions, most of which have grown out of the social and political ideas and relations characteristic of modernity. The cultural logic and form of networks, as well as concepts such as open space, Empire, multitude, cultures of politics, resistance, and biopower, as well as the pluralisation of many conventional terms (such as knowledges) and the term alter-globalisation itself, are some of the efforts underway to rethink and rework political and cultural-political concepts and practices.

In addition, there are many significant events, ideas, and personalities in history that are today familiar in a general way but little known or understood – but these understandings are crucial for an informed and critical engagement with the world around us.

It is in this context that at CACIM we are trying to build a political-cultural glossary on world movement explaining this new and changing cultural and political vocabulary, and the changing and newly emerging meanings and ideas of the terms being used. It is also an attempt at comprehensively documenting the emerging vocabulary with the aim of explicating it in the world around us at more popular, everyday levels. We hope to be able to facilitate a deeper understanding of politics and of movement, and in particular some deeper comprehension of each of the empires that confront us in our daily lives and attempt to bind us, and to contribute more generally to debate on modes of civil and political association, organisation, and action, and on prevalent and potential cultures of politics. Our attempt is to present multiple perspectives that can help the reader make examined choices oriented towards facilitating a climate and culture of critical reflection, enquiry, and discussion.
